I’m rereading Buchanan’s account of his time at war tonight and it’s pretty wild what he comes out and says. Like how he and others in operations allocated the worst ships to MacArthur because they hated the guy.

Or his description of encountering FDR at a meeting in Hawaii, referring to his “basketcase disability” and bring “totally dependent” on nurses.

I’m rereading for what is actually one of my positive papers on him (I feel like my work on these guys is divided between “positive papers” and “negative papers”), but it’s pretty wild what he writes up sometimes.

Sometimes I feel like people just don’t give him the chance to speak for himself. Like in the same book he literally praises the Agrarians by name. Unpacking that is more complicated of course but people tie themselves in knots to ignore what he writes up without hesitation.

Tbh I think it shows a disrespect for him to try to dance around the full picture.

Where does the urge to whitewash him come from? I mean it's not just people who are ideological sympathetic. Even putative liberals turn their eyes from this stuff.
