What is the principled case for why it is important, transparency-wise, to know exactly how much Substack has paid or advanced every writer, but not for us to know exactly what every NYT staffer makes?

I think that's right but the longer term growth problem for substack will be that its potential peak audience looks different if it is a wide open space or if it is primarily a haven for cancel culture contrarians.
