“Contrarianism” is just a slur against people who, annoyingly, simply refuse to fall in line.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1372381103525298176 …

“The status quo” is a slur against things we see that we don’t like — whether or not it is the dominant reality. Is the moral superiority of free, unrestricted expression the status quote on the Left? It used to be, but whether it is now is debatable.

Calling them a “contrarian” is implies they only disagree out of malicious pleasure. It blissfully frees you frm engaging w/ what they say. “I don’t listen to disagreement on the Right bc their priors are wrong. I don’t listen them on the Left bc their are arguing in bad faith.”

I guess, I feel like there are commentators who make challenging prevailing assumptions a core part of their output, and who are often described as contrarian for this reason, but who do not defend the status quo

(e.g. these are contrarian posts within the discursive community they're aimed at https://www.peoplespolicyproject.org/2018/10/15/three-brief-notes-on-the-climate-change-debate/ … https://www.peoplespolicyproject.org/2019/04/23/providing-reparations-for-victims-of-unfree-college/ … https://www.dissentmagazine.org/article/matt-bruenig-left-case-against-free-college …)

Contrarianism *is*: Donald Trump watching the other Republican candidates for President respond to the question of whether they would unconditionally support whoever the GOP nominee is, and then saying "No" once he realizes everyone else is saying yes.
