@SteveScalise using the exact same epithets and insults on today’s immigrants that were used against his Nonna it makes me ill.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Just listened to a podcast on the 48ers expelled from Germany and how prominent they were in the union army and antislavery movement, and for me the big takeaway was “I want anyone expelled by a dictator, anyone fleeing repression, all the refugees. I’ll take em all”

No idea if it’s still there but in ‘11 I visited Ellis Island and they had an exhibit in the museum area that featured recordings of various anti-immigrant speeches and writings from various periods. More people should experience it, it really laid bare how repetitive it all is.

Well except there’s also a whole thing where white folks compare Irish indentured labour to Black slaves and they are not the same at all.

...wait, this is unfashionable? Seems pretty clear to me that the only way an Irish-American could legitimately take pride in that identifier is if they continue to identify with the oppressed. We got fucked over, but then we got lucky. We can't pull the ladder up behind us.

Right, growing up in an Irish Catholic family my grandma, who had pictures of JFK, MLK, and the Pope on the wall, would tell us “this is how they treated us, don’t treat other people like that”
