Kenner's grandfather, if I remember correctly, was a typesetter and Kenner knew something about the trade (although I think only worked in it glancingly). Some knowledge of typesetting is actually crucial for understanding publication history of Ulysses & Finnegans Wake.
Fritz Senn, who worked as proofreader dealing with typesetter for decades before becoming a leading Joyce scholar, has thoughts on this in his book Joycean Murmoirs
