But that’s it—there are lots of models. Why insist on radical renunciation of the past when there are other models that might be more constructive? The radical renunciation model feels more punitive than forgiving, if it is not *necessary* to improve the person.

I think there's a critical difference between an exile and a hermit, that being volition. I don't think a path to forgiveness can begin with irreconcilable punishment, that's just abandonment.

Being a hermit isn't supposed to be a punishment. Hermits aren't people who sinned so horribly that they had to be banished from the rest of humanity, they are people who specifically choose to live that lifestyle in order to pursue spiritual growth.

Isn't all this basically the alcoholism argument. For some people touching the stuff one time sends them back into addiction, for others, after kicking the addiction you can have it in moderation. But it's not one size fits all, which both of you seem to argue.
