i know like one kid who would sometimes say it just to be edgy (he would also say other slurs). calling people f*ggots, on the other hand, was endemic in some cliques. though had petered out in most settings by my early 20s

Oh yeah, casual homophobia was pretty common in high schools I went to. Not kids being "edgy" -- using slurs sincerely. But that was ages ago and things might have changed.

kinda what i'm saying. it was always contextless "lol bad words fun" kinds of stuff. the a actual dehumanizing was always among people who found the word obscene. i suspect it's because my bubble was nearly entirely evangelicals, who avoided anything conceivably close to swearing
