1. Manchin's often gets profiled as a moderate or a conservative but his actual political stance is a bit odder than that. Being a Dem Senator from a very red state, he's figured out a way vote with his party on major legislation while keeping a distance.https://twitter.com/joshtpm/status/1368932881754685442 …

3. Look at this recent actions. If scuttling Neera Tanden's nomination was the price to pay for a vote for $1.9 trillion stimulus, I'm not going to shed any tears. The trimming of UI top up by 3 weeks was bad, but pales against one of the biggest stimulus in history.

4. There's also the minimum wage, but he was hardly alone in voting against it. And the minimum wage can be brought up again after filibuster reform. $15 is a lift but Biden might get $12 tied to inflation, which would lift up many working poor.

5. I say let Manchin have a few small victories if that gives him cover to vote for big Democratic bills.https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/manchin-stimulus-democrats-biden/ …

It's not a perfect analogy because Maine isn't nearly as blue as WV is red, but I think her mindset is the same.

This definitely seems to be the case. Instead of getting mad about it Dems should be happy they have a vote from *WV* most of the time, and focus more on golden opportunities to flip PA&NC, longer shots in OH&MO, and possibly WI/IA if Johnson or Grassley retire.

Exactly. Manchin votes with Dems on big issues. Sinema is much more grating not only because she isn't in a red state but because she seems to be trying to create a maverick image of herself where I can see her voting against big issues.

I'll take it if it means he makes changes to the filibuster that allow us to get things done, especially necessary voter protections. Which it sounds like he hopefully will?

How much of that is Manchin intending to vote with Dems all along, vs Dems making heroic efforts to keep him from defecting? I think the “Manchin cycle” meme makes folks think his vote is a sure thing. He’s clearly gettable, doesn’t mean we don’t have to work hard for his vote.

One problem with Manchin's antics is eventually the other senators will realize their vote counts as much as Manchin's and start to play the same game of making unilateral demands of the other 49.
