the trouble is, in hierarchical professions, in-person acquaintance with leaders has a significant role in structuring the hierarchy. reducing opportunities will make it more scarce and desirable, unless we invent some digital institution that replaces the role.

I'm sure colleges and universities would love to cut the funding for faculty to take trips. But that is thousands of dollars that faculty members would have taken from them. Not to mention the cities that benefit from people coming to conferences.

Second, targeted access for international and/or grad student participation where finding is limited, though I fear this will end up splitting participation into multiple 'tiers', and could encourage less $$$ support for those who need it. 2/3
