Bad comparison. This cost estimate for the F-35 is for a "lifetime" that runs through 2077. The annual budget allotment for the plane is between $15-$20 billion. Pretty sure you could have gotten bipartisan support for a Covid relief plan that cost $15 (or even $30!) billion.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1368241527688884224 …

Obviously $1.9 trillion is nothing to sneeze at. But I'll note the lifetime cost for the F-35 -- a plane that doesn't even fucking work -- is $1.7 trillion. And that has broad bipartisan support.

The comparison is between something good that helps people and something that is completely useless. Whether payment for useless thing happens all at once or not isn't terribly salient.

"Well actually" Jesus. These people are relentless. It never ends, and it never means anything, is never about anything. Just pure smug gibberish.

I'm not a huge fan of the F-35, but statements that it "is completely useless" and "doesn't fucking work" is outright hyperbole. Like many defence projects, it hasn't met expectations. Like many defence projects, it's difficult to assess overall value until it becomes 'needed'.

Does the F-35 provide value within the context of performing the role it is mean to perform? Yeah. In a combat role, it's a solid fifth-generation platform. I wouldn't dump them in the ocean. Does it underperform for the $1.7T price tag? Sure, absolutely.

Even if it is a perfect killing machine it's not a good use of resources, except for contractors to plunder govts on both ends

It's not "completely useless." And saying "Passing this Covid relief bill isn't that impressive, because look at how much money we spend on national defense" is just ... what's the point?

Conflating annual vs total expenditures is a type of sloppiness that Rs will (disingenuously) attack the left for making. Best not to do it. If we'd agreed to pay off Manchin $20 billion a year to end the filibuster, many wd agree, boondoggle or not.

With treasury lending rates at practically zero, it doesn’t matter whether something is paid for all together or over a long period of time?

Yeah, there was a lot of bad press during development as they worked out the kinks, which is to be expected for such an advanced fighter. It would be like making fun of US space program early on because some of the rockets blew up. It is a good plane, though. No F22, but good.
