One thing about the Brooks business is that a lot of people have the mistaken idea that being a writer for New York Times is a job. But for an entrepreneur like Brooks, the Times gig is a loss leader to advertise the real business (public speaking, books, foundation moolah etchttps://twitter.com/dankennedy_nu/status/1368197221875916807 …

So, what's to say
@nytdavidbrooks isn't parsing his columns not to say what he really believes, or what he wants to say to read and believe, but instead phrases every sentence in the form of the question: "Which $50,000 speech will these words get me?" -
In Brooks’ case what difference does it make? His writing and opinions all support the current power structure — he’s already a professional suck-up. If I had proof he said out loud he was consciously pitching for payoffs I’d actually admire his unexpected self-awareness!

The very idea of anyone being paid $50k for a speaking engagement is absolutely absurdpic.twitter.com/5FV7E5Sd9r

There's an audience for culture war idiocy but middlebrow. I get that, and good for him. But what does the NYT get out of it. I understand it's hard to find a good token con, for "balance" but surely they can do better than Brooks? Esp when he trades on their name so much?
