I had never heard of any of the depublished Seuss books. My friend shared a PDF of McElligot's Pool. There is absolutely no racism in it anywhere. All it did was use the word "Eskimo" once. The people who deemed this needing to be erased are fucking psychotic.pic.twitter.com/YvHac4bdqR

Maybe it's different in the USA, but in Canada using that word to refer to the Inuit is offensive. A bigger issue here because many more Inuit per capita. (This is separate from the question of whether the book should be kept in print).

The portrayal shows no animus or disrespect, just using a word that was only one in the English language to name that group at the time that has subsequently been deemed offensive. I'm sure they could swap out the word with no loss to the book

No, the history here is important. The word has always been deemed offensive by the Inuit (as often with word applied by outside group). I don't think historical Inuit opinion can be discounted. But sure, replacing word is easy solution.

Not that many Americans in 2021 have heard of the idea that Eskimo is offensive; I certainly didn't until a few weeks ago, quite coincidentally. I guess the attitudes among the indigenous up there are different than the ones down here:https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/new-poll-finds-9-in-10-native-americans-arent-offended-by-redskins-name/2016/05/18/3ea11cfa-161a-11e6-924d-838753295f9a_story.html …

In places where Inuit have some political clout (in Northern Canada and Alaska) there has been move going back decades away from "Eskimo" to Native or Inuit. Obviously the farther you get from Inuit populations, the less known this terminological issue is.

I'll be honest, I had never heard that "eskimo" was offensive.
