I think I have been good about staying out of Seuss Discourse but I gotta say that it is freaking weird watching people immediately coalesce around the narrative that WHO CARES NO ONE HAS HEARD OF THESE BOOKS rather than exhibit an iota of critical curiosity. Seems cultish.

I think among white liberals, especially, there is such a culture of moral panic now that you need to dive headfirst into the allowed online position (always extreme, always deeply contemptuous of any disagreement) so as to constantly peacock that you're one of the good ones.

For all I know the other books are deeply offensive but watching people broadcast loudly that they don't care that -- or weren't curious enough to find out that -- Mr. McElligot's Pool *doesn't appear to have any racist content* is very very weird!

ANYWAY! Just imagine how the journalists and pundits tweeting what they're tweeting about this approach their paid work, especially when it touches on more complex and controversial and important issues. When people tell you who they are, believe them.

We need to shut down The Discourse until we can figure out what the hell is going on https://theweek.com/articles/969971/why-dr-seuss-cancellation-chilling …pic.twitter.com/GgOcRqcs4W

Look, I don't want to pull rank here but I've edited 3 scholarly collections on comics (one of which won an academic prize) & also edited or contributed to 50+volumes reprinting old comics (often with racist images discussed). The minstrel stuff in Seuss is indisputable.

I mean Cathy's article points out that he has definitely printed some offensive stuff. The issue is more everyone's knee-jerk reaction and lack of curiosity about one of the books not appearing to be racist at all but still getting pulled.

I don't know about the United States but in Canada the word used in that book to refer to Inuit is considered a pretty terrible slur (as it was historically). There are lots of Inuit here and that's a pretty strong consensus.

Also "Terrible" is an exaggeration. Not sure what you're referring to about the history but "Eskimo" was simply the word that plains natives used to refer to the people north of them which the french adopted after meeting them.

Generally speaking, the U.S. has much less cultural understanding of First Nations peoples, and most Americans don’t even realize that particular word is considered a slur. It’s slowly changing, but we’re nowhere near where Canada is.

Let's pray the American people develop a full appreciation of First Nations culture. It's another item the intellectual class can add to their list of grievances about the commoners.

What about the use of racial slurs from different cultures? Like the use of Gweilo?

Much more disappointed to see the DuckTales-level ambiguous-Middle-Easterner in “On Beyond Zebra” get that brilliant book pulled personally
