I think I have been good about staying out of Seuss Discourse but I gotta say that it is freaking weird watching people immediately coalesce around the narrative that WHO CARES NO ONE HAS HEARD OF THESE BOOKS rather than exhibit an iota of critical curiosity. Seems cultish.

I mean Cathy's article points out that he has definitely printed some offensive stuff. The issue is more everyone's knee-jerk reaction and lack of curiosity about one of the books not appearing to be racist at all but still getting pulled.

I don't know about the United States but in Canada the word used in that book to refer to Inuit is considered a pretty terrible slur (as it was historically). There are lots of Inuit here and that's a pretty strong consensus.

Literally not a single kid - you know, the intended audience - in history has ever drawn the connection between the Cat in the Hat and minstrel shows.
-
That's partially because the minstrel stuff has already been successfully erased from culture. But the historical connection is there. Again, this is a separate issue from whether the book should be not kept in print (I would say it should).

And yet it is being disputed. Weird that we all don't take the word of one guy who has a professional incentive structure to find a famous target and find fault, real or imagined.

Wait he said it was indisputable tho

Even if so, that is 0% going to be picked up on by children – and 0.0001% of adults for that matter

Just to be clear, you’re saying that the minstrel stuff in Cat in the Hat is obvious? Or in some other books that were cancelled?
