Speaking of "cancellations," interesting factoid I stumbled on the other day: After 1780, "King Lear" disappeared from British repertoire for 40 years because George III started showing signs of mental illness and the whole "mad king" theme got, well, a little too un-PC.

Until the 1830s, I think. Also, the Fool was taken out.

No much later. The Tate version predominated until Granville-Barker restored something close to the original in the early twentieth century. He had a similar effect on Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra and still other plays.
