Split-the-baby moderation yes, neoliberalism no. If you try to stitch together two very different paintings, you’re often going to get something that’s uglier than either of them. A well-designed means-test > no means-test > a bad means-test.

And I’m not “walking back” anything. I’m happy to be openly introspective and admit when my ideology’s best-laid plans backfire, but I’m not letting others whose are often even worse off the hook. It’s too bad our political discourse discourages admitting flaws.
