Amazing thread of classical music in animated cartoons. Lots of stuff here I wasn't familiar with.https://twitter.com/NonsenseIsland/status/1366449816042102787 …

THREAD: Lots of us learned classical music from watching old cartoons, so I’m going to identify the pieces that frequently popped up. One of the most recognizable is Franz Liszt’s “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2,” performed by those great piano virtuosos Bugs Bunny and Tom & Jerry. pic.twitter.com/SmyKbMpw3e

There's a public radio show called 'The Score' that often features the continuities between early 20th classical music and film music, in part because so many composers moved to the US for both political reasons and a regular income. Cartoons were a logical extension.

My 1st exposure to Beethoven might have been the Huntley Brinkley report, which played the scherzo of the 9th over the closing credits cc @NonsenseIsland

Many of these reference early film, I think. E.g. Brahms on the radio perilously guiding Chaplin's movements while giving a shave, and adjustable chair height gag in "Great Dictator" overtly referenced in the Bugs/Fudd Barbershop/Rossini bit. I'm sure film buffs catch many others

Mike Lindell reminds me of the guy in the classic WB cartoon "One Froggy Evening" who finds the singing frog sealed in a cornerstone—but, failing again and again to make it perform publicly, eventually disintegrates into a ruined, weary husk of humanity. https://mediaite.com/a/nbdwu
