      1. I have some good news and bad news about Trump's CPAC speech.

      2. The good news is that although Trump gestured at running again it was a low energy performance and his heart didn't seem in it. That could change but right now he doesn't seem in campaign mode.

      3. The bad news is that Trump even if Trump doesn't run again he's very intent on maintaining his stranglehold on the GOP. Many gestures about punishing his Republican enemies.

      4. In other ways beyond Trump's speech, CPAC showed a Trumpized GOP. Trump may or may not run again but the Trumpization of GOP is continuing. The Civil War in party is over & Trump has won. More here:https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/trump-speech-cpac-gop/ …

So Trump likely has no interest in holding office, but will continue to damage the GOP by forcing it to adhere to his his very (nationally) unpopular image. Where, exactly, is the bad news here?

That's ridiculous. He's been out of office for a month.

Why do you think the GOP doesn't see this as self-destruction? Is the support for Trump at higher levels actually real, rather than pragmatic as I thought before?

A perfect narcissist response. “If I can’t have it, nobody can have it”. Which at least is good for the world.

Let's be honest, there never really was a war. It was always the actual GOP base vs. a handful of institutionalists and self-styled intellectuals who found Trump personally distasteful but who are thrilled with his tax cuts and judges. The "struggle" was really just about style.
