Where were these West Virginia voters three months ago, when they voted 70-27 to send Shelley Moore-Capito, a conservative Republican, to the Senate?https://twitter.com/jbouie/status/1365120340402266117 …

60% of Florida voters supported a minimum wage hike in a referendum in a state where GOP has 2 senators, governor & state house. All evidence is minimum wage is much more popular than either party, rightly so.

If West Virginia voters wanted to massively increase their chances of getting a higher minimum wage, they had an obvious choice just three months ago: vote for a Democrat for Senate. They didn't, because they care more about culture-war stuff than economics.

It's a pretty consistent pattern across advanced democracies that as center-left parties move to the right on economics then culture wars come to the fore.

The Democratic Party has been moving to the left on economics for at least the past decade. The election was in November, and WV voters still overwhelmingly chose Trump/Capito over Biden/Swearengin.

The Democrats have been moving left rhetorically. I'd say they have to show results to convince people. As of now the voters have Obama's anemic job growth followed by Trump's full employment & robust CARES act.

That Democrats took the opportunity to institute a massive (if temporary) expansion of the welfare state even though it hurt them politically gives us some useful information about what Pelosi et al actually value and want to see happen policywise.

So then isn't this the answer? It's not necessarily that they didn't vote democrat, because they care more about culture-war stuff than economics. It's that they don't understand the relationship between who they vote for and what happens (because our system makes it opague).

Democrats actually moving left on economics (not just rhetorically) is perfectlyu consistent with this.
