This act of pretending there’s nothing to see here is getting tired. Maybe even for you?

Which you? Me? I would not say there is nothing to see here, not at all. But I am interested in how it relates to what came before, and also to the proportional representation of its importance with respect to other important things.

Representation to importance? Probably about 10 to 1.

Having only ever taught at Canadian schools that are the equivalent of state universities, I'm always puzzled by the huge attention given to Ivy league universities and small liberal arts colleges, places that are very atypical of most schools.

Definitely outsized influence but part of that influence is the way these schools dominate media and attention economy as well. One path forward is to diminish their power in society.

A robustly populist political movement could make an issue of their social power. Their endowments can be taxed more. Politicians can be pressured to appoint judges and officials from a broader array of schools. The state schools could get more funding.

And the US could become Canada! Arguably desirable, but not bloody likely.

Very desirable but, agreed not likely. Still, these institutions and the role they play in society shouldn't be seen as impervious to change.
