Yes, and sometimes it's the footnotes and marginal asides (in Freud's case) that are starting points for new ideas. Too much of this "I haven't read the book or seen the movie, but in my view it's bullshit."

Capital is really hard to read without lots of prep work, but some of his work like "Theses on Feuerbach" and "Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844" are actually fun.
