Buckley and Bozell were both published writers, and Hunt had literary pretensions. (He wrote a series of unreadable spy novels.)

Just like Buckley!

And why wasn't Buckley "F. William"?

That's interesting. Set me off to reading, incl. Buckley's LA Times remembrance of Hunt. It plays down their interactions ("several" visits to Buckley's home) after Buckley left Mexico & CIA in '52. And, yet, Hunt's wife named WFB to administer her estate. Is there more there?

When Bozell ran for congress in 1964, Bozell joined his staff -- although no one can say what he did. Very strange.

Hunt was a VERY devout, conservative Catholic. Makes more sense in light of Bozell’s very real theocratic aspirations. Bozell as the visionary and Hunt as boots on the ground.
