... conservatism. The Intercept has some good stuff on that that I'd wish I'd seen before I wrote. Leo remained a Democrat but of course in the 1930s you could still be a very conservative D. In my v. brisk research I didn't find any political statements by Leo.

I'm just consulting the Kelley bio right now -- I got the Catholicism wrong (relying on memory of another book). But Klleey also softens some of the harder edges of LBB Jr.'s politics.
