A huge problem with the way people like @jonathanchait conceptualize free speech is that they see it as threatened only by the extreme left and extreme right. But free speech is often just as threatened by centrists and moderate liberals, as with Macron.https://twitter.com/kyfrack/status/1362632745747324928 …

Wow Macron is a moderate liberal? Damn. We're in trouble.

Still a lot of latent ethno nationalism in the center that makes it hard to critique xenophobia

Though this is Macron trying to appeal to Frances far right, despite the fact he stylizes as a centrist.

The irony here is that the French blame Americanizing influences while the Americans blame the same thing on French postmodernists.

Far more so. In corporate world or “respectable” neighborhoods/organizations you can’t voice any controversial thought if it is a reality that privileges the privileged.

I would also argue that large corporate entities (Amazon/Google/Facebook) that are at best a failed technocratic liberal experiment and at worst are private rightwing institutions, are a much bigger threat to free speech than some abstract notion of Marcuse’s repressive tolerance

Also often neglected is the long tradition on the left of defending these speech rights from liberal attacks

The idea that Macron is a moderate is the sort of "radical centre" BS propagated by Ignatieff and his "lesser evil" ilk.

It’s hilarious that you and Chait believe that ideological categories like liberal, progressive, conservative, moderate have fixed, ascertainable meanings, and that you can accurately classify people. It’s a silly assumption, however useful it may be to the commentariat.
