One of my genuinely conservative beliefs is that it's important to acquire a taste for art created before you were born.https://twitter.com/robpalkwriter/status/1361640883741986817 …

Imagine refusing to watch Dr Strangelove because it’s black and white!! Or Bridge on the River Kwai because it’s old. “Madness!”
I once had a friend nearly refuse to watch African Queen with me because it was black and white... Fortunately, I talked him into it and he was eventually forced to apologize, lol
Playing any instrument tends to do this. My musical taste is ALL OVER THE PLACE.
Example, I first saw Citizen Kane when I was a teen, hated it. But I continued to watch old movies and love them. When I saw it again in a limited release in my 20s, I had seen enough movies before and after it to really appreciate how revolutionary it really was and loved it.
I agree, but also find the Citizen Kane example weird. I actually watched it for the fist time a few years ago and thought it was extremely accessible! (And I am not a film buff at all.)
It's true. It's not one of the old movies where you have to make an effort.
There's a certain cultural fluency is that is lost if you don't haven't at least taken in a good cross-decade smattering of works of art. You don't have to like them, but it's good to know what they are and how they are.
The best part of reading, like, Tolstoy is seeing just how similar humans were 6,000 miles away and 150 years earlier.
Exactly. Reading classic literature provides excellent insight into the universality of human emotions. Conversely, it helps you appreciate the peculiar cultural disguises and forms these universal emotions adopt through time. It’s very fruitful.
I watch and enjoy old movies, Citizen Kane is not one of them. I’ve tried several times and I don’t understand why other people like it.
