I’ve just listened to the @KnowYrEnemyPod about the 1776 report and am once again struck by how its account of Progressivism is head-spinningly alien from anything resembling history.

Look at the dates. Jaffa was born in 1918, Bloom in 1930. 12 year difference. Jaffa was Strauss' first American student (at New York U), Bloom a student of 1950s Chicago Strauss. The Strauss Bloom knew was a very different figure.

The Strauss Jaffa studied with was a WWII Strauss, very eager to promote a patriotic mythology & make peace with religion. The late 40s/1950s Strauss that Bloom knew threw more hints about his doubts about modernity, America, & religion.

Yes! You’re totally right. There was/is much more to say on the Straussians. (having just read Ravelstein at Matt’s urging, I’m particularly eager to chat about Bloom more!!)

My old Jaffa obituary gets at some of this story:https://www.jacobinmag.com/2015/02/harry-jaffa-obituary-jeet-heer/ …
