I have seen this personally in large consulting firms that model themselves on tech companies. Lot of hype and hot air to inflate careers internally, when 90 percent of it is vaporware.

that seems true to an extent! But I'm not sure that's more true than the idea that media hates tech in part because media companies are in financial competition with the tech industry

I don't think media hates tech at all! For the longest time all tech reporters were fan boys and they ran around crazy-chummy with founders/CEOs. Marc Benioff, for example, often partied with reporters and had very personal relationships with them.
