Since McConnell & Co. are trying to parse the exact language of the constitution, as my wife points out, why would the constitution include barring further office holding, if they didn't mean it to apply to former officials.

If anyone facing impeachment did a vote count, they could resign just before the vote and avoid this penalty. If we give the writers of the constitution credit for not being morons, they must have intended this penalty to be applicable to former office holders.
