There's something to be written about how Robert Heinlein, who could at his worst be a right-wing militarist meathead, was also very open-minded about queer sexuality (something that writers like Joanna Russ & @SamuelRDelany1 responded to when young).

Wow, I read Russ' "The Female Man" when I was in college and it had a profound effect on me. Haven't thought of it in sooo long.

Heinlein was far more influential in my more conservative-leaning youth than Ayn Rand ever could have been. The right should really trade out their Rand-shilling for Heinlein-shilling. At least the writing is good.

In this interview, Chandler Davis - who was himself very left-wing - points out that many of the socialist ideas in the Astounding Magazine in the 1940s and 50s were (paradoxically) found in Heinlein's stories: https://www.pseudopodium.org/repress/chandler-davis/ParadoxaInterview.html …

Yeah, Heinlein was a socialist in the 1930s and only slowly and partly shifted to the right in late 1940s and 1950s. Very complicated writer and thinker.

Sometimes I think a lot about how much midcentury sci-fi considered trans issues something of a philosophically solved issue, like everyone agreed more or less what The Future would think about it (some post-apocalypses excepted), regardless of what present society did.

🙂Erm, just to show how openminded Mr. Heinlein could be, I'll just leave this here. (AFAICT, btw, not the inspiration for the Hooters tuneage of the same name...🙃):https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_You_Zombies#Plot …

He also came across as an utter misogynist freak in books like The Cat Who Walks Through Walls (etc). I mean, yikes - talk about cringe.

? That would be the one in which the female character takes the lead? I dislike the book but I don’t see what you are describing.
