I don’t see how ending at-will employment solves the cancel problem in a milieu where “signed a letter that made me feel less safe” could be construed as justified grounds for termination.

So it's your view that if he had refused to resign when management asked him to, the labor union (some of whose leaders led a parallel *firing campaign*; many of whose members signed a doc effectively demanding his firing) would have rallied to his side?

If they hadn't he had the option of enforcing his contract. Under the rules he was not supposed to be disciplined twice for the same thing.
