    1. It's true that 99.9% of the commentary on this is fabricated hysteria from people who are just using it as a proxy for other fights. But not me. I think Lincoln was a good president & there should be more schools named after him. Worth asking why there aren't more.https://twitter.com/willwilkinson/status/1358487945351675905 …

I don't understand why people get so hyperbolically distressed about a school board somewhere they don't live changing the names of schools for dumb reasons. It's embarrassing to see.

        2. This list from Wikipedia is instructive. Lots of Lincoln schools in California and mid-west. Not so many in Deep South (although South Carolina has two). Some not on this list are attenuated (Lincoln County School in Mississippi is indirect, not direct, naming).

        3. California has at least 6 schools named after Lincoln. It could, frankly, lose a few. But Mississippi? North Carolina? Virginia? Louisiana? The people excised about San Fransisco should be agitating for Lincoln schools in those places.

Why are schools named after people anyway?

Here in The UK if schools have names it's usually the name of the founder, which can be embarrassing if he or she was a nefarious character.

Agreed. If we can’t celebrate the good things we’ve done in the past, how are people supposed to believe we’re capable of good things now.

Three years ago my local community renamed a middle school that was named after a founder of the eugenics movement. The change was driven by students who found it offensive. To watch that energy turn into this is frustrating.

The reason for Abraham Lincoln being taken down was his treatment of American Indians. But there *are* some real issues when a school board uses historical falsehoods and refuses to consult historians in making decisions. https://www.newyorker.com/news/q-and-a/how-san-francisco-renamed-its-schools …

Huh, reading that article now. Feinstein already had a school named after her, and it's being renamed because of some controversy over a Confederate flag a few decades back? Around here, there is no way a school would be named after a person who's still living. Period.
