If you look at Guston's early work you will see that the cartoon aesthetic was there all along.

Guston is very on trend this last decade as a way to market young ab-ex/cartoony painters, with Guston as an almost mystical influence. Acknowledging the non saleable tradition he comes out of = bad for business.
