      1. The New York Times thinks Joe Biden is going too fast with the executive orders. The editorial is chiefly valuable as a distillation of the Times propensity for a myopic Mugwumpism.https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/27/opinion/biden-executive-orders.html …

      2. In late 19th century, the Times was a big advocate for the Mugwumps, an upper-middle class faction obsessed with civill service reform at the expense of everything else going on (Reconstruction, the KKK, mass unemployment & strikes, mass foreclosures). Times is still the same

          3. Being the Mugwump mooks that they are, the Times is fretting over executive orders as if there hadn't been a botched putsch earlier this month which explains why Biden needs to demonstrate his authority. Didn't Garfield get murdered for being a Mugwump, though? And then Arthur, a Stalwart (anti-Mugwump) implemented the Mugwump agenda anyway.

Garfield was murdered by a crazy person, I don't think you can relate any ideology to that

One editorial does not Mugwumpery make. Did the 19th C NYT have regular columnists like Goldberg, Krugman, and Bouie? Did it run controversial, widely read features like the 1619 Project? It's a liberal paper, not the voice of patrician centrists - which is why Trumpers hate it

it’s very much still the voice of patrician centrists, who humor other currents of thought by lending them a voice, but without ever letting them overshadow the paper’s core identity

To be fair to Charles Sumner and the other Mugwumps, it was hard to deal with those other issues if civil servants could be bought and sold on the open market
