This is well argued, though I still don't quite find myself persuaded. I find myself pushed and pulled in a bunch of different directions on this entire cohort of questions and don't have anything approaching strongly settled views.https://jacobinmag.com/2021/01/censorship-big-tech-facebook-twitter …

It always ends up to me a bit like arguing over "regulation" in the abstract. Some regulations are good and some are bad! Depends on the regulation. People try to turn arguments about regulation into whether there should be more or less, but that doesn't really scan.

If the problems of censorship and speech control exist, better for them to be grappled with by democratically accountable governments than unaccountable plutocrats like Zuckerberg & Thiel.

I agree that in order to make it to our Star Trek like future paradise, we will eventually have to nationalize companies that get too big. I don’t think we’re anywhere near that point in time though.

The answer to this question depends on if you think the people can more easily hold tech executives or government accountable. In normal, well-functioning democracy, the answer is easy. Right now, in the US, I'm afraid it's not so straightforward.

We need to turn the centralized model of social media inside out, which is the only way it can work in the long runhttps://twitter.com/showusyourwork/status/1266056018452262913 …

I've been saying this for a while: everyone is entitled to post, likes and retweets are not guaranteed, "social media" companies would just sell curation/discovery algorithms accessing publicly available data

What if we nationalize Facebook, then get an illiberal, unaccountable government in 2024, whether honestly or not? Then every progressive user's Facebook gets literally combed by a team of trolls likely /organized by/ C*rnov*ch and P*s*biec, then handed over to a captive FBI.

Contrarian take: if you take them over, you end-up with politics ultimately doing nothing for fear of angering the right. If you just mandate a fairness clause, then the situation is more muddy.

Why the US government alone though? If the logic is applied properly, Facebook should be a department of the UN, no?
