You can apply the schema to Obama as heralding the rise of multi-racial democracy, a kind of centrist Leon Blum

The Obama / Leon Blum comparison holds up really well - eloquent intellectuals from despised minorities whose ascent to power drove the Right into paroxysms of hate, but whose worldviews were inadequate for comprehending let alone addressing the huge crises they faced

We're individualising and robbing these questions of context - Blum had several mass parties and organizations behind and against him, Obama just ran an impressive presidential campaign.

      1) If the question is: What conditions are necessary for fomenting a popular base for fascistic politics, then I don't understand why the objective strength of the left would be a key factor...

      2) The social blocs most susceptible to fascism historically now experience social reality as mediated by rightwing television, radio, and blogs. They *believe* that a socialist left is ascendant; more than that, they believe *correctly*...

This is exactly the situation that does *not* yield fascism. Its analog on the left are the liberals who experience reality mediated by MSNBC and *believe* a fascist right is rising. But since it's just a TV fantasy, they form no actual armed cells, just epic mic drops.

The problem isn't that it's fantasy instead of reality. It's that it comes from watching TV rather than fighting in a war and coming home to economic collapse.... Being a conscript in trench warfare : being a Brownshirt :: Watching Hannity : being a mass shooter

you dont think there are really disruptive social and economic changes at foot in the US? maybe not quite as dramatic as post-war europe, but its not nothing.

most people could never be a brownshirt because most people are not sufficiently practiced at or inured to daily casual violence...but ex-conscripts are.

As @EricLevitz explained, militarization is just one of the many causal factors that can lead to a 'fascism' - without those other preconditions the end result is at best a hybrid.

Yes, and the preconditions for fascism are never monocausal! You need (1) organized threat from the left (2) high rates of militarization (3) a very dense civic landscape, a (4) command state and (5) proper social dislocation.

American society is very violent, but it's still a long ways off from Gallipoli or the Somme. From American cops, you get not blackshirts, but FTX weekends, which can of course themselves lead to the Whitmer kidnapping plot or even Oklahoma City.

every society has a certain number of people with the right dispositions. the question is how many. some cops do, sure - not the parking cops or desk jockeys. so how many is that? my wikipedia-ing tells me that relative to population,
