1. In retrospect the failed putsch of Jan. 6 was likely the last chance the GOP party elite had of severing ties with Trump. They could have coalesced around a quick removal (either through 25 Amendment or impeachment). Instead the party is becoming more Trumpified than ever.

One caveat: Nobody knows what Trump will do. How will he exert his influence? Can he do the work to lead a party? (narrator: unlikely) Without his platform, Trump may be much weaker than most people think. McConnell's bet to ride it out is risky but not completely irrational.
-
McConnell hasn't been riding it out, though--he's been using it as a lever to achieve his goals the whole time, and will continue to do so. If burning statehouses and kidnapping governors installs more Republicans in Congress, he will just keep quietly celebrating.

AFAIC, the only correct framing for the GOP now is that they're the political wing of the American fascist movement. Their commitment to (and outright connections *with*) the paramilitary wing is comparable to that of the mainstream political parties in NI during the Troubles.

It IS naive but at the same time nobody can say "unity" was not tried. Before you go to full blow war, it IS the right thing to try. If it still ends up the way it was mostly always gonna end up, so be it.

We’ve been trying for decades and it hasn’t gotten us anywhere

Is Trump to be considered the de fact nominee in 2024, or is he more likely the kingmaker?
-
It's his nomination to lose, if he wants to run. Unless he's in jail...
