Going out on a limb I'd say people who think Hollywood and the Democratic Party are run by Satan worshipping pedophiles who should be executed can fairly be described as hostile to liberalism as such rather than just 2020 election. https://twitter.com/AliceFromQueens/status/1352369092062302209 …

So what's stopping them from denouncing the Bill of Rights as such? What's stopping most of them from saying people in Hollywood shouldn't be allowed to vote?

Did the Confederates denounce the Bill of Rights or did they say they were defending the Constitution? Jim Crow voting laws never outlawed voting by an entire class of people -- still Jim Crow voting laws were in fact illiberal and anti-Democratic.

As I'm sure you know Jeet, the most important thinkers of the confederacy, like Calhoun, Hammond, and Fitzhugh, did turn against liberalism and the Constitution.

Of course, they did. Calhoun's whole project, going back at least to the 1840s, was to make war on the liberalism of the Declaration, which he sees as "the most false and dangerous of all political errors" that gave rise to abolition. His model of concurrent majorities, he says,

This is a minority position among confederates, most of whom justified succession as preserving legacy of 1776, which they took to be Lockean inheritance of a democracy of white property owners (with slaves as legitimate property). McPherson is good on this.pic.twitter.com/qC3K6XFoEN

That's just a simple invocation of the right to separate. But the rejection of the Declaration and its underlying principles is a common feature in southern thought. If you read the original sources (Faust's anthology is good), it's all over the southern position. Dew, Harper,

Hammond, Nott, and more: all of them constantly have to disavow the Declaration, and these are the intellectual godfathers, along with Calhoun, of the southern position.
