A more nuanced read of the speech might be that Biden used "unity" in deliberately ambiguous way to reach different audience. Occasionally Kumbaya unity but also a more content-filled unity in rejection of racism & anti-democratic politics.

not sure how good this canny/savvy stuff is as we're approaching the final decline of symbolic efficiency

Everyone knows this and people pretending not to are just funneling their dislike of Biden into it. Biden sucks but I don't really see the point of making up things to be mad about.

This take is so oblivious it's "not even wrong".

Shorter Biden: You can be conservative, you can be progressive, but you can't be against democracy or the decency and humanity of all.
-
The trick is how you define "democracy" (one of the most abused terms in English), "decency," and "humanity." Many have claimed those and supported systemic racism. Will Biden push to eliminate the Electoral College and the Senate? Two moves towards greater democracy?

I think people have missed the subtleties of what Biden means by unity. More clear in this speech.
-
It's only subtle if you don't want to hear it. That was NOT a Pollyanna speech.
