it's good that the fascist hard core are organizing a national political party?

Of course it is. The threat of a fascist splinter party winning power following a break with Republicans in a first-past-the-post system pales in comparison to the threat that the GOP poses as currently constituted

Here's why I'm confused. Donald Trump has been repudiated by the Republican leader of the Senate. The #3 in the House wants to convict him. Only a minority of Republicans say they would vote for him in the 2024 primaries. He leaves office the most unpopular president in recorded

history. I see all this as reason to rejoice, as cause for optimism. But the prevailing view on the left rn seems to be that I'm dangerously naive, because the *real* threat is from the fascist hordes Out There, who are scheming and plotting as we speak: militia types, Nazis,

QAnon crazies, Christian nationalists. Now it turns out it would be cool if those people formed a party with chapters in every state and an ex-president as their leader, because then the Republicans would be sooo fucked? I guess I'll never really understand the fascist threat.

Fascists are a bigger threat if they are the plurality of one of the two biggest parties. If the right splits, that makes a fascism less likely. That's good not just for Dems but for left: divide your enemies if possible.

You're saying if the gun-toting crazies get totally locked out of power they're less of a threat — notwithstanding the national organization they now have at their disposal.

I think gun toting crazies are most dangerous when they have allies running the state. Anything that makes it less likely for their allies to run the state is welcome.

So, as a hypothetical scenario, you would rather have a full-blown fascist party with a national presence, but with Democrats controlling all the levers of power (for now), than have, say, Nikki Haley as president, from a party with a fascist faction?

You think the Republicans, if the Trumpists remain a plurality in the party, will be running a Nikki Haley anytime soon?

Yes. I don't know who they will nominate but I think Nikki Haley is as good a bet as any.

Frankly this idea (wish? hope?) that the GOP is going to be Trump's party in 2024 is ludicrous..... There is so much désir de Trump on the left
