Since the fascism question is still raging, let me recommend @leninology's essay, which I thought was one of the most cogent interventions in the debate.https://www.patreon.com/posts/is-it-still-if-45896691 …

My big comparative history thought on the Trump fascism debate is that Europeanists & Americanists were talking past each other & there should probably be a conference bringing together students of fascism & USA far right.

The fascism question is - literally - academic. The rest of us can carry on.pic.twitter.com/JfgSjkjRUM

Yes. Absolutely this. I’ve been very lucky to have a chance to briefly study both because of my teaching schedule. I would do anything to see it happen.

Best point of comparison is probably Brazil, really. Especially regarding the fallout of slavery. (To the point that a large contingent of ex-Confederates resettled in Brazil)

They're not wrong. Being extremely patriotic is like being proud of your dick. It's fine that you're proud of it, but becomes a real problem when you start waiving it around in public and insisting that others look. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What do you see as the actual upshot of the debate? Are there implications for how to “defeat” Trumpism if we consider it (or don’t) to be “fascism”? Or is it just fun to debate?

you didn't ask me but there are two main upshots. 1) economic anxiety: Fascism arises during times of economic crisis and stagnation. Makes intuitive sense: demagogues blame scapegoats. 2) liberals have dishonestly gone from arguing that we need to be pragmatic and compromise ...

So if it isn't fascism until they succeed, how do you fight its nascent stages? Surely you have to call it something to discuss its tendencies? How about ... I don't know ... fascism?!
