Hypothesis: 'populism' became a liberal bogeyman once the liberal romance with 'civil society' turned sour, driven by the realization that associative activity and mobilization is by no means intrinsically liberal.

Good point - the most aggressive anti-populism certainly didn't come from Progressives c.1900. The narcissism of small differences might have kicked in later.

Fair. Certainly in terms of full-blown anti-populist theories, mid 20th C and early 21st C saw *much* more production.

Yes insofar that some prob. thought they could harness GOP developmental coalition toward a more egalitarian politics while containing labor & agrarian militancy. If they were Democrats, the latter still applies, but in a context of renationalizing party via northern workers
