Is there also value to connecting each of those to the rise of a fascist movement? Also, I'm curious what the analogous history in, say, Germany would be. The "classic" story I've learned only goes back about 15 years pre-Hitler and the Depression -- is there more to the story?

It's definitely both. Consider how American slavery and laws to subjugate Black people *inspired* the German Nazis. Our "one drop" law was too extreme for them, so they modified it.
