He would just get another platform, which people would have to pay attention to because he is, after all, the president of the United States. It's his being POTUS that's the problem, not twitter.

Do you think 10 million people are going to sign up for Gab just to follow Trump’s blathering? He needs this platform more than it needs him.

He doesn't need all those people to sign up. Journalists and supporters will read those and quote them, on twitter and elsewhere. Just like now with TV news shows reporting on what he tweets. It's the fact he's president his words carry, not the medium.

I don’t think that’s right. The genius of Trump in this regard is that he understood that this platform was perfect for him – he’s not really an Instagram guy! – and that he could go straight to the voters without intermediaries. Your scenario denies him that adrenaline rush.

To put it another way: why would a guy who has been thriving in a 21st-century means of direct communication be content with going back to something more 20th century? It doesn’t compute, and it doesn’t match up with anything we’ve seen regarding his behavior.

Yeah it’s weird to just assume that every president has had precisely equal ability to communicate with the electorate which was a function of the office and not their chosen media strategy. Do we think FDR would have had the same media reach if he was thrown off the radio?

It's also just laughable, this idea that any modern president -- but Trump in particular! -- would just "find another way" to get the message out, like through the fact-based media, which he despises? Or through other officials and pundits, who might mangle his intent? 1/2

It would be like evicting a fish from its tank and saying, "He'll evolve, it'll be fine, you haven't really done anything to him." 2/2

I would like to revisit this thread now, because I think my conclusions were correct, and what has happened the last 24 hours proves it.

Yes, I think you were right about this. Trump is really dependent on Twitter/Facebook & isn't easily able to construct an alternative network.

I think this is what usually happens when two smart and thoughtful adults have a disagreement on Twitter.
