We rewatched the first two GODFATHER movies this week, and it really struck me how clearly Coppola shows us that Vito's qualities are distributed amongst his children, and not necessarily to their benefit. /1

Sonny gets his compassion -- he's always looking out for the family, and it's rushing to Connie's aid that gets him killed. Fredo gets his kindness but none of his situational awareness, which is why he's constantly saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. /2
