I first found out about Lasch 5 years ago @ Moe’s Books in Berkeley. An absolutely bizarre, wild-eyed man aggressively tapped me on the shoulder while I was browsing, shouted “young man, are you an employee? I’m looking for some stuff by Christopher Lasch,” then stormed off.
-
He then doubled back, angrily interrogated me about him, didn’t seem to understand that I wasn’t an employee, and stormed off again. Very strange experience.

I mean yes, but really, the problem is that many of his "followers" are pretty shallow, not actually zealous adherents. The prescriptions and fears in The True and Only Heaven, or Women and the Common Life are very unlikely to meet widespread approval among these "followers...."
-
What I think is most interesting is how his thought is embraced by many who like where he aims his arrows, but would blanch at what his substantive views were. And it is partly his views being uncommon (and prescient, but even more the former) that make him chic.
