What are some fun biographies written by authors who clearly think their subjects are awful? First one that comes to mind for me: Dominic Sandbrook's Eugene McCarthy bio, which becomes a tragedy about an egomaniac trying to claw back relevance that he only accidentally earned.

Frederick Crews recent book on Freud is incredibly hostile.

Stephen Kotkin's bios of Stalin are surprisingly enjoyable to read: he seems to know about every party the tyrant gave and who said what to whom after third or fourth vodka. The narratives about wars, mass murders, and political intrigue are excellent too

Isn’t his life’s mission as an author more or less to destroy Freud? I haven’t read his books, but I have read the occasional anti-Freud rant in the LRB / NYRB and the like.

I’ve read several of those NYRB articles!

Crews’ obsession with Freud was already a joke 20 years ago. It’s a shame that he hasn’t moved on—the man has talent, and he’s been throwing it away.
