It's hard to reconcile the emerging pundit consensus that "Actually, the USA has had a generous stimulus compared to peer nations" with all the other evidence of fraying social order, like rising hunger.https://twitter.com/MindyBe/status/1338642193741967360 …

Exactly. US has the illusion of a more generous response because we lack most automatic stabilizers that kick in to support people in more developed welfare states, so discretionary relief has to be substantially larger.

I think we had a pretty decent response for several months after which time everyone was on their own. Analyses that focus on Q2 look pretty good, but aid fell off a cliff after that.

ofc centrist punditry & PR does a lot of a) silly leftists, economic security & it's attendant dignities is only for the merited b) why oh why are so many Americans giving up on the institutions of liberal democracy without connecting b-->a

I'm sorry but what measure are people using to suggest the US is more generous? in what ways, that matter to people, has it been more generous?! Other nations got more money to lockdown

Poverty DECREASED in the US during the first round of stimulus (Unemployment + checks) which is absolutely insane, but as Jeet points out it's only because of the horrid standard of living in the USA.
