I hate neo-liberalism too, man, but it's not the neo-libs fault that you can't travel faster than the speed of light, that interstellar space is inhospitable to life, and distances between stars are very, very large.https://twitter.com/NathanJRobinson/status/1340824411100901376 …

I think reluctance to believe in extraterrestrial life is part of neoliberal "end of history" ism. If the universe is teeming with life we haven't yet found, but could, it suggests that neoliberal capitalism is not our peak but is in fact a very primitive early historical state.

Counterpoint: there's almost certainly ETs. But given vast distances of space, contact is low priority. Humans evolved on earth, which will always be the home for almost all of our species. Our political focus should be on preserving that home.https://twitter.com/NathanJRobinson/status/1340824411100901376 …

I certainly agree that we must build socialism on earth before turning our attention outward. It sounds as if we agree that aliens are real and that once we fix politics on earth we can think more about this.

Yes, preserving earth as a habitable planet (for humans & nature) is first priority. Space exploration is compatible with that but best done with robots. Space is too harsh an environment for currently existing humanity.

Deep space travel is impossible with our current level of technology. Even with robots and AI.

Until we have power sources that can run potentially thousands of years and AI/robots that can repair/maintain themselves and the ship they are housed in, we definitely aren't exploring beyond the Sol system.

tell me would you rather have 100 million years of human & animal flourishing Earth and the a chance of developing lasting postplanetary life or cheap oil for the next 10 years and send Elon Musk's dessicated 80yr old to an inflatable habitat where he can drop rods on camp Bezos.
