I hate neo-liberalism too, man, but it's not the neo-libs fault that you can't travel faster than the speed of light, that interstellar space is inhospitable to life, and distances between stars are very, very large.https://twitter.com/NathanJRobinson/status/1340824411100901376 …

I think reluctance to believe in extraterrestrial life is part of neoliberal "end of history" ism. If the universe is teeming with life we haven't yet found, but could, it suggests that neoliberal capitalism is not our peak but is in fact a very primitive early historical state.

Counterpoint: there's almost certainly ETs. But given vast distances of space, contact is low priority. Humans evolved on earth, which will always be the home for almost all of our species. Our political focus should be on preserving that home.https://twitter.com/NathanJRobinson/status/1340824411100901376 …

we are less than a hundred years from hitting the great filter and finding out firsthand why we have not had contact with intelligent life in the universe

Radiation, gravity and the fact that terraforming will take many centuries make it unlikely.

I could see neoliberalism as a reason for Aliens to preserve the prime directive though. in a sense of “These need to cook a bit longer “

The problem is @NathanJRobinson 's premise is off. Neoliberal capitalists don't need to care whether anyone believes that ETs exist or not. It's just not relevant. And we didn't need aliens to think capitalism mightn't be the best idea ever.

Capitalist realism depends on convincing you that There Is No Alternative. The existence of socialist aliens would invalidate this. Thus capitalists do not want you to think about aliens. But I agree capitalism would be just as bad without aliens supplying additional proof

That, and the fact that most life on this planet is microscopic, so why wouldn't it be so on other planets? Aliens are probably just more bacteria.

Agree with your conclusion. Given the vastness of resources off of earth compared with on earth I'm not so sure of your prediction of population on earth vs off.
