I find it so strange that anyone thinks humans could be "alone in the universe." The universe is vast. There are clearly tons of aliens. And if they're developing technology at a similar pace to us, then we're probably all about to meet each other soon. It's going to be bizarre.

something with constant acceleration like an ion drive, laser/sail, etc could achieve a significant portion of the speed of light and, with time dilation effects of relativistic travel, make it there in human lifetimes, theoretically, as long as they're ok with a one way trip.

I read “Ender in Exile” and “Speaker for the Dead” this year, and the effects of relativistic travel make for fascinating chronologies.
